Is the Good Old Interweb Already Dying, or Is There Any Chance of Survival?
Hope that these investigations will entertain you this Monday evening,
at least to some extent, and provide enough food for thought.
OK, a few mandatory words of preface, as usual.
Today, for some reason, I’m in the mood to discuss things in a podcast-style, but only in text.
Why is this happening? I can easily tell you:
it’s because you’re probably on the weirdest resource on the whole internet,
where technology, creative things and rants meet in one place and merge into something unusually interesting.
Like it or not, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve been inserted into your job by your mom/dad/relative and you’re a golden boy/girl who doesn’t do a thing
at work for a hefty salary, or you’ve paved your own way, working hard beyond your real capabilities until your eyes/ears bleed, earning pennies.
You will all be replaced by AI sooner or later.
This is inevitable, and it won’t happen for the sake of some kind of hypothetical efficiency. It will happen so the rich can get even richer. That’s one of the essential cruelties of the world, and we can’t do anything about it, because this tradition has lasted for many generations and can’t be retired easily, at least not by humane methods.
Moreover, your whole life is worth nothing. Whether you have a family with a neat wife and cute kids or you’re a lonely loner on the road, no matter what you do or what you’ve got behind you, you will be completely forgotten in, say 100-150 years. So let’s talk about something more important than human lives.
Now that I’ve lowered the bar of your self-confidence, we can continue. This was done to increase your perception, so you can understand the situation better.
Even though I consider people useless in 98% of all cases, I still have to admit that humanity [a tiny fraction of it] has invented things like computer technology and, of course, the big old interwebs, which are degrading faster than you may think. That will be the main topic of today’s note.
So how come mankind’s greatest achievement, the internet,
has become such a mess nowadays?
- the greed of large platforms, locked in a never-ending race for more money, is creating an unhealthy environment for the development of the global network
- big-tech/government restrictions/sanctions are limiting what we can watch and how we should watch it
- enormous amounts of advertising and scams bury real information under 90% of unnecessary, invasive content
- bloated, heavy frameworks and dumb AI code are slowing down website performance, requiring much faster consumer computers
- big corpos are buying up all the hardware from manufacturers to make your personal computers even more expensive. They see you using a terminal without any real processing power, connected to their network, which provides you with computing resources on a subscription basis. That’s their dream.
Now go through the list once more.
See the pattern loop? See where it’s going?
Aha. That’s right.
Regarding the 2nd bullet point: a good example is Reddit’s recent desire to lock its content away from users who aren’t logged in. That’s probably why their stock dropped by 30%. Frankly speaking, I haven’t given a sh#t about this platform for a year or so. And yeah, even their Windows 7 community sucks. Not worth a dime.
As for governments, especially autocratic ones, they substantially slow down and degrade network infrastructure by installing loads of DPI proxy analyzers, bought with your taxes, to restrict what you can view and how. For their own benefit, of course.
So, as you can see, the "big" people are doing whatever it takes to poison the internet and alter it to their own liking. It's not a free thing anymore; it's already transforming into something resembling television, which in terms of usefulness is already dead.
But at the end of the day, if you’re an experienced user, you can surely clean out all the gunk and find quite good information buried under loads of political propaganda, AI slop and various so-called information noise. Though it will become a much harder task day by day.
OK, that’s enough for today.
And yeah, don’t forget to get enough sleep tonight.
That’s what’s really important for you.
