One more S.T.A.L.K.E.R. posting if you don’t mind. Mods and [modern versions] are nice, but classic [Stalker series] shouldn’t be forgotten too. Here is a list of classic games. [Shadow of Chernobyl] ► original first version of Stalker game series [the most atmospheric & my favorite one] [Clear Sky] ► prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl [Call of Pripyat] ► sequel to Shadow of Chernobyl Vivid table, which conveniently represents games from the most buggy to the less buggy.
As a big fan of [Stalker series] i can’t afford myself to skip such title as [Stalker: Update] . Is an ambitious project to replicate Fallout 1 world using Fallout 4 engine. Currently game in it’s early stage of development, but location of Shady Sands was already showcased to the public. Developers intend to redo original voice-over because of copyright trademarks. Moreover they are trying to copy voice aesthetics as close as possible to original Fallout 1. Also you can already preview multiple soundtracks created by [Radiofloyd] . As for me, I really like what they are doing, despite the fact that I’m not fond of Fallout 3/4.
I already mentioned desktop version of [UFO: X-COM Defence] . Also there is open-source [Android port] of the game. UPDATED ON: 2023-03-16 If you like pixel art quests and [cyberpunk] atmosphere here is a good suggestion: [Technobabylon] . Game is published by Wadjet Eye Games previously known for brilliant [Gemini Rue] . In brief: detailed dialogue lines, immersive atmosphere, cool design aesthetics. Music composer is Nathan Allen Pinard, who is also known for immersive soundtrack for Gemini Rue. So you won’t be disappointed in terms of musical vibes. I think that 50% of game’s atmospere comes from music.
[Unreal] is a cult 3D shooter developed by EpicMegaGames back in the 1998. Game unfairly received much less attention comparing to well-known Half-life, despite: more beautiful computer graphics, more atmospheric soundtrack and better overall design. One of the first games to implement 32-bit color and complex illumination. Reason: game was more demanding on system resources. Pentium II with at least 128Mb of ram and powerful GFX accelerator were mandatory requirements.
UPDATED ON: 2023-06-29 There are three main configuration files, which are controlling Fallout engine. ddraw.ini ◄ main configuration file f2_res.ini ◄ settings for high resolution patch fallout2.cfg ◄ classic settings file from 90s [preserved for compatibility almost depricated for now] Here i’ll mention the most important setttings, which can come in handy for almost every Fallout player out there. UPDATED ON: 2022-04-27 Added Even More Contraptions Excellent time killing game with a noticeable profit to grey matter of your brain. Game where every click is satisfactory. I recommend to acquire [The Incredible Machine Mega Pack] released by GOG store, which includes 4 game parts in a one solid package. My favourite is [Incredible Machine III] for Windows 95/3.X. ░▒▓█LIKE IT FOR NEAT PIXEL PERFECT SVGA GRAPHICS█▓▒░ GAMEPLAY PERSONAL CAMCODER SAMPLE
[Frank Klepacki] is well known for [Command & Conqueror] soundtrack released back in a mid 90s. He brought awesome progressive sound to PC platform, which was pretty innovative especially after FM bleeps’n’blops of the 80s era. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t have anything against frequency modulation in games. [UFO X-COM: Enemy Unknown] is an excellent example of how music should be done when you are squeezed by multiple limitations like waveform shapes, file size and so on.
No bla-bla-bla here. Just a little breakdown of best computer games ever. [Fallout 1/2] [X-COM: Enemy Unknown] [Transport Tycoon Deluxe] [Tyrian 2000] [Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl] [Civilization II] [Diablo I] [The Incredible Machine III] If you would like to play these games on modern computer you are in luck, coz most of them were forked to open-source or remastered versions. [Fallout Restoration] [OpenXcom] / Extended version [OpenTTD] [OpenTyrian] [Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl OGSR] [Civilization II:Test of Time] [Diablo II: Resurrected] And yeah, no cyberpunk 2077 here.
As you may already noticed i like to give a reference to Microprose games. Previous posts covered masterpieces like [UFO: X-Com] and [Civilization II] . And i’m doing that on purpose. Games of the past primarily relied on solid and very high-quality storylines. Back in the day processing power of computer was quite limited and developers can’t offer breath-taking graphics. So they have to use head to output quality entertainment product.
Sky Force is a neat vertical shmup on Android to kill your time on boring job. Excellent graphics and solid demoscene soundtrack of Reloaded remaster a bit spoiled by developer’s greed, coz game balance is tuned for purchasing stuff via real money. But if you are ok to play without microtransactions and slow progress is acceptable for you, then game is highly recommended. Of cource it can’t be compared with [Jets’n’Guns] or classical [Tyrain] , but anyways it is worth of mentioning here and can be counted as decent time killer.
Seen marvellous [UFO X-Com] ? So, here is another masterpiece by Microprose then. In my childhood i was obsessed by [Civilization I] , which can be played in plain DOS only. Game graphics was very pixel sketchy and forced the brain to complete imaginary world by myself. Many sand was spilled across the sand-glass. There are VI parts of the game to date! [Second part] of the game was released back in 1996.
UPDATED ON: 2022-04-03 Modern version of classic Diablo II with fully revamped graphics. [Official system requirements] doesn’t mention mighty Windows 7. Not long ago i’ve told about [Diablo I modification] . Now it is time for something not so vintage. Diablo II to be precise. As you may know even the latest expansion set Lord of Destruction didn’t brought screen resolutions greater than 800x600. And when you play it on a 30" inch screen monitor with width resolution of 2560 pixels it looks kinda blurry. There are couple of patches, which brought higher resolutions, but unluckily all of them don’t work with latest version of game: 1.
