Modern Operating Systems Like Android 16 Based Around HyperOS And Ubuntu 24 Are Driving Me Nuts

Continuing a series of posts describing flaws of [programs] and [operating systems] .
Count this as another rant regarding modern computer technologies and where they are heading.
If previously I was annoyed only by modern Windows and Android operating systems,
I recently found out that Linux can be a total disaster too.
But first things first: most of you already know that Xiaomi’s modern version [HyperOS] of stock Android is a pure atrocity.

Brief breakdown from the least annoying to the most irksome features:

• sometimes when you select text, the popup balloon with the copy/paste options won’t show up at all
• “Paste” or “Select all” options are constantly hidden, forcing you to tap the unfold icon for no reason
• the Bluetooth indicator sometimes fails to show the remaining battery percentage of external devices
• constant notifications pop up about their bloatware services being unable to connect to home telemetry servers
  [if you for some reason decided to cut network access to metioned bloatware]
  
• inability to permanently block or restrict system services with custom made permissions
• default applications are constantly reset to prevent you from installing higher-quality, third-party replacements
• custom application permissions and settings are removed without asking the user after yet another useless so-called “update”

Surely rooting the device will solve all issues, but operation of complex sensor array of the camera will be affected,
since there is no third party camera software, which supports such advanced imaging technologies

And now for the most important and “exciting” cherry on top of this mess.

The desire to drastically restrict the user’s right to install third-party applications,
no matter how incredibly annoying it becomes for the end-user.

Just look at what these companies have already implemented:

• to enable USB debugging for side-loading external applications, you are forced to create a Xiaomi account
• after getting this account, they immediately try to tie you to their cloud [for now, you can still decline it, yet]
• if you install an application from a FOSS source like F-Droid, or just a plain APK distribution,
  you will be harassed with loads of annoyances [look below]

To say that they overdid it is to say nothing at all.

To be able to install application you want you will be forced to do the following things:

• tap multiple times in various locations just to proceed
• tick a disclaimer check-box
• tap the button confirming the check-box
• tap a three dots menu
• tap Chinese hieroglyphs
• agree to continue, sometimes via swapped buttons [which, of course, are in Chinese]
• swipe an unlock pattern
• solve external captcha
• enter your account passcode
• sometimes these options are changing their order and pattern of appearance [!!!]

… and they surely won’t stop to work in this direction until they completely render target device totally useless for end-user.

It seems that next one “protection” will be to take a picture of yourself with your passport and send it to them

As you can observe, we have reached the inevitable conclusion that software designers do not use what they create,
and they are surely hostile and no longer user-friendly.Most things are already broken,
design principles are convoluted to the point of no return, and simplification for better understanding is an ancient history.
More importantly, they continue to tie the user to their services to suck even more money and impose their own rules,
ignoring the user in 99% of cases.And I am not talking about retrograde nostalgia here ► I am talking about common sense.

It looks like I will only purchase a next smartphone if it meets my expectations in terms of periscope camera hardware.
I just don’t care about the software side anymore - that’s for now it’s just a tool.
A ridiculously bad one, but still a tool, and no longer a hobby.
And if that doesn’t happen, I’ll use my Xiaomi 15 Ultra until it fries and then
switch back to a fresh Sony XZ1 Compact running Android 8.0.

Maybe it is somehow better? But nah, that was a completely wrong assumption.
As we all know that assumption is a mother of all f#ckups!

Here is a quick list of things i run into when deploying Adsboard project in Ubuntu 24 LTS.
I stuck with long term support version hoping it would have fewer bugs [haHaha].

• the console terminal crashed with an error and made zero attempt to restart
  [frankly speaking, I haven’t seen such things happen in the past]
• sometimes the text editor fails to copy lines when action is done via the mouse context menu
  [though CTRL+C works just fine].
• sometimes Ubuntu saves text files to an external flash drive without reporting any errors,
  but in reality, the file turns out empty while creating an additional temporary file with
  a weird name that actually holds the original content.
• It is already noticeably slow on a 7200rpm HDD.
  I know it’s 2026 and everybody has an SSD, but what the heck?
  [This is on a 7950X machine with 64GB of RAM].

And all this just after a superficial acquaintance, but what if we were to dig deeper into the topic?

But i won’t, enough of jaw flappin’ for today.
