Absence of wife surely holds some benefits [or not?], well, it depends from which side to look at. Of course she’ll prevent you from spending such crazy moneys for “just simple earphones”. But at the same time she’ll force you to spent money on the topics that she is interested more than you, leaving you emotionally unsatisfied. So ladies and gentlemen we have a pure tie here. Nobody wins, i am amazed how fine-tuned the world is.

Nothing foreshadowed trouble for my permanently empty wallet until I found out about these f#cking headphones. You can say “Hey, what’s wrong with you? How about already GOOD Empire Ears Raven?” In this post i’ll try to explain the whole endeavor from in-depth perspective of things.

The main differences that FATFreq implemented dynamic driver into generic version of this headphones. Anniversary founder’s edition have been added one more driver for a complete bass annihilation.

This baby is astronomically expensive, but since i had an opportunity to grab them for a half the price. I just can’t miss out such situation. To better understand the full scope of the adventure you need to know that there are only 350 [Anniversary version] and 200 [Anniversary founders edition version] units produced worldwide. So it is extremely limited and rare production.

So what are the main differences comparing with Empire Ears Raven? FATFreq is a non-US, innovative Singapore-based company that produces earphones mainly for IEM enthusiasts. And by the way, maybe you already know that Empire Ears announced it’s shutdown in the beginning of the year.

The main thing that there are almost no reviews (at least on YT) of FATFreq Grand Maestro Anniversary Founder’s Edition because of it’s rarity and extreme expensiveness. So here i am to do the job for you.

Of course, as most of the reviews it is highly subjective and describes my vision of the story. But at least you’ll have a relative comparison and some food for the brain to think it though during rainy autumn season. For you reference i prefer to listen to advanced electronic music, with occasional dips into contemporary stuff. I value deep bass, good instrument separation and hate high mid-to-high frequency sibilance. So know you completely know with whom are you dealing exactly.

No matter what you get plain Anniversary or Anniversary Founder’s Edition you get plethora of different trinklets to affect sound output in a substantial ways. So, basically you have multiple IEM bundled into one package and that should be appreciated. It’s not just VOX switch improving mids (read vocal) it has multiple modules which affect sound articulation to your preference. And in the end of the day we have more than twenty of sound signatures in one unit. Quite darn impressive! At the end of the day you’ll probably settle down with one, but what is more important here is that you can tune the sound output to your preference.

Ok, to the internals.

As you can see GMA FE trades 2 balanced armature into 1 additional dynamic driver. In theory it should elevate bass boost and reduce quality of mid frequencies.

I’ve opportunity to listen to both of them. And my conclusion is that i’ve decided to stick with … GMA FE

Anyways, let’s dive to the most interesting part - audio comparisons.

FE delivers a bit better resolution than GMA version.

FE delivers more holographic and immersive stage especisally compared to Empire Ears Raven or even Odin. GMA is almost on the save level as FE.

GMA already delivers massive bass, FE improves it even more and make bass sound like your listening to larger can headphones. You may ask “But what about Empire Ears Raven?” In case of this EIM bass is like a drone and not so scathing and textured compared to FatFreq tech.

GMA is a bit better here, because of two additional balance armatures.

Both GMA and FE have very soft and not annoying trebles.

Both GMA and FE have least amount of sibilance compared to day Empire Ears Odin/Raven.

• extreme bass quality for such a small earphones
• extreme resolution and detail
• much less sibilant than Raven and Odin
• nozzle made of harsh material as a consequence ear tips slip offs will hopefully become a history

• faster power drain of DAP due to large impedance of FatFreq GMA/FE
• requires very powerful DAP, Lotoo PAW Touch GT2 handles FatFreq GMA/FE at 80% of volume in high amplification mode. [actually GT2 has an extra high mode, so it is more than a capable DAP]
• em…actually i can’t say anything negative anymore

Some words about the most important hi-end IEMs in 2026.

[Mysticraft Hexen] is somewhat trebellish so it won’t fit my taste for sure, how ever it is very technical. [Subtonic Storm] has a lack of bass, but delivers amazing resolution and detail, desk-sized DAPs or external amplifier are required. Lotoo GT2 barely satisfied Subtomic Storm and only at the very high amplification preset.

Both of headphones are extremely rare due to low numbered volumes of production and hard to find. More over the waiting time after attainment is somewhere around from 6 to 12 months.

My thoughts are quite simple FatFeq Grand Maestro Anniversary /Founder Edition are not only collector items, they deliver summit-fi performance to people obsessed with bass frequencies. Provided bass is not just drone of some kind but highly textured and articulated bass with great attack. Amazingly devices deliver very solid performance in areas like resolution and detail, it is not so common thing for bass-forward IEMs. It is portable master-piece, which won’t be easily surpassed in terms of performance in the upcoming years.

It seems that somebody must stop me at this point, because it turns out to some kind of rapidly increasing obsession.
