VERY ADVANCED SETTINGS FOR CLASSIC FALLOUT

There are three main configuration files, which are controlling Fallout engine.
- ddraw.ini ◄ main configuration file
- f2_res.ini ◄ settings for high resolution patch
- fallout2.cfg ◄ classic settings file from 90s [preserved for compatibility almost depricated for now]
Here i’ll mention the most important setttings, which can come in handy for almost every Fallout player out there.
Provided tweaks will be useful not only for essential [Fallout 2 Restoration Project]
, but for other Fallout like games like [Nevada]
, [Sonora]
and [Olympus 2207]
.
Be aware of the fact that some settings especially related to speed may break original experience or may not.
I prefer to play in original 800x600 resolution, to preserve 100% compatibility.
Anyways all of above mentioned games developed in this resolution in mind.
So, here is a list of most important settings, which improve gameplay drastically.
Provided settings require sfall v4.2.9.1 or above.
[SPEED]
The initial speed at game startup, i prefer a little speed boost over default 100%

Set to 0 for 8 bit fullscreen

Sets in game resolution, i prefer to play in native res

Set to 1 to do the palette conversion on the GPU [faster]

Fade effect time percentage modifier. Default is 100. Decrease/increase this value to speed up/slow down fade effects

Set to 1 to display terrain types when hovering the cursor over the player’s marker on the world map

Sets the number of allowed simultaneous sound effects The maximum is 32

Set to 1 to use the Fallout 1 code to control world map speed

Controls the world map speed if WorldMapFPSPatch is 1. Higher values cause slower movement

Prevents you from saving in combat except at the start of your turn to avoid a few bugs

Set to 1 to get notification of karma changes in the notification window

Set to 1 to skip the 3 opening movies Set to 2 to also skip the splash screen

Set to 1 to add additional pages of save slots

Set to 1 to fix the bug that caused bonus HtH damage to not be applied correctly

Modify the maximum number of animations allowed to run on a map. (Default is 32, and the maximum is 127)

Set to 1 to fix the bug of being unable to sell used geiger counters or stealth boys

Set to 1 to prevent losing of player’s car, when entering the location using the Town button

Set to 1 to allow in the control panel of party member by re-pressing the buttons of the best weapons/armor to remove the equipped item

Set to 1 fixes the bug for multi-hex critters in combat, hurting yourself when they miss-hit when using throwing/shot weapon

Set to 1 to enable improved NPC behavior in combat mode

Set to 1, to the NPC to always switch to the best weapon available in his inventory

Set to 1, to force the NPC find more suitable targets every his combat turn

Set to 1 to fix the behavior of AI in combat when the NPC attempts to pick up an item on the ground

Set to 1 to fix the NPC’s behavior when switching weapons at the end of its turn when the NPC doesn’t have enough action points

Set to 1 to force Fallout not to use multiple processor cores even if they are available

Enable DirectX7 mode [Fallout-based games work best in DirectX 7 environment]
