No illusions here, because it is a pretty transparent question and you don’t have to be an overwhelmingly smart person to understand it. Here is a handy list of straight facts about why Linux will always be your secondary operating system and not your primary one:
as of 2024 we have over 600 [!!!] distributions of Linux, just look at [distrowatch]
Why do we need them all? plethora of desktop environments > 50 [if we count only major ones it will be close to 20] As if three variations were not enough?
Surfing through meaningless tier lists on YT dedicated to various Unix graphical user interfaces by home-made experts without even showing them in a proper way and doin’ subjective ratings, i’ve stumbled upon on “obsolete” [CDE]
environment and was interested in it’s 90’ish looks, despite the fact that “expert” narrated that it is in a “yuck” category and not worth even touching.
After jogging through comments i’ve noticed that some wise man mentioned about modern reincarnation of CDE project named [nsCDE]
.
Right after installing [Manjaro Linux]
i run into weird issue. Most of needed applications like Firefox and Thunderbird take around 10 seconds or so just to startup.
Such behavior on NVME drive is unacceptable at all. Problem was in a serious [bug in gnome desktop]
, despite the fact that i’m running XFCE desk.
Workaround for GTK-based desktops is to run following commmands in terminal:
sudo pacman -Rdd xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
sudo pacman -S xdg-desktop-portal-gtk Imagery by spacedrone808 @Adobe Imagery by spacedrone808 @Freepik
Recently, I’ve decided to install Linux for web development to make sure that i’m not missing something in terms of modern features and technologies. I chose [Manjaro]
with [XFCE]
desktop.
However, all multimedia works are staying on Windows 7. I still can’t find proper replacement for Vegas Pro and many other tools i use in my daily workflow. [Modern web is working]
, [security is updated]
, so i don’t see any reason to ditch it in favor of something more fancy.

Vim is for sure a discovery of the day. It is a [very fast text editor]
and will be helpful not only for coders, but can be useful for people who is working with insane amounts of text information. Software is 100% keyboard oriented. It’s based around original Unix text editor [Vi]
, which was released back in 1976.
VIM 9.
Some time ago i’ve mentioned the fact about [Linux usage]
on my laptop. It was a [Manjaro]
based around [Arch]
.
Recently i stumbled upon [SalixOS]
review. It’s a simplified [Slackware]
distro with modern fast [Xfce]
user interface. As you may already know Slackware is the most “Unix-like” Linux distribution. Besides i can’t afford myself to skip distro with motto:
"Linux for the lazy Slacker" Here is a quick intro into Salix operating system.

Quick note of imaginary small-sized phone for a computer geek. Chance of real life appearance is pretty close to zero, especially considering current drumb trends and marketers domination over common sense.

UPDATED ON: 2023-01-24 After long consideration my interest is lost, due to understanding the fact that 4G module is 100% closed blackbox, which cancels all privacy benefits of the phone in one stroke. It’s a true thing for official version of the phone. On the bright side there is an [unofficial open-source project]
of modem firmware in early alpha. Will report back if something good happens.
I bet some of you are already tired of ugly g monopoly with their telemetric data mining platform os-called operating system.
And will not sing praises on how cool Linux is. Because I know that it has its own quirks and inconveniences. For testing I almost randomly choose [Manjaro Linux]
with lightweight [XFCE desktop]
. Manjaro is based upon [Arch distribution]
.Yeah, ubuntu is too much pop for me. Key benefits of Manjaro are quite transparent: modern & stable environment and pretty vibrant community. I understand that Linux don’t have all software, which I need and try to find software replacement in a while.
